At Swords Estuary tonight, a late Swift, and a juv. Mediterranean Gull. Also the 2 juv. Curlew Sandpiper and about 5 Ruff still present.AGK

Ibis Update
:  The ringed Glossy Ibis at Portmarnock was U6U and was ringed as a nestling in the Coto Donana, Spain.Info from Julie Roe.CM

Broadmeadows: Juvenile Ruff and Reeve, 2 Curlew Sandpipers showing well, 4 Golden Plover and 3 Knot.BK

Dunany Point this evening: Lots to note. At Hermitage, 200+ Common Scoter and Red-breasted Mergansers showing well, close to shore. Also with the flocks were several Great-crested Grebes and 1 Summer plumaged Great Northern Diver.  Lots of Seabird passage with Arctic, Common and Sandwich Tern passing off shore in large numbers. Also on passage, Gannets, Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars, and Kittiwakes all heading south. 
Meanwhile down on Cruisetown Strand: Lots of waders, 50 Ringed Plover,12 Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Little Stints, 4 Ruff and lots of Sanderling, Knot, Dunlin all present in high numbers.BS

 

30 August 2010
Clogherhead: Good numbers of migrants with Whimbrel flying south. On the headland Wheatear, Stonechat, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff present.BS

Bull Island 6 p.m.:  6 Shoveler (outflow north of Causeway) and 1 Whimbrel (just south of Causeway).PR
One Swift over Malahide west this afternoon.DO'M

10:15am Tacumshane Wexford 1 Osprey still present, seen dipping in and out of the water about six times. Looked like it was washing. Also 15 Curlew Sandpiper in with the Dunlin. 1 Glossy Ibis and about 10 Ruff. Also seen a probable Buff-Breasted Sandpiper in the patches but lost it when the Osprey arrived.PC

Two Juv. Curlew Sandpipers at Rogerstown this evening.  Also the pure white Swallow still present at Swords/Broadmeadows this evening.
Five Brent Geese flew north at Bremore, Balbriggan. Also c.50 Tree Sparrows present in newly cut cereal crop field at Bremore.AGK

Single Glossy Ibis still present at Portmarnock this evening at 7.30pm.MK

Three White Wagtail along the beach south of Bremore Point, Balbriggan, with a few Wheatears also present.AGK

One dark Arctic Skua flew right up Bull Island today. From the wooden bridge, right over the causeway and on towards Howth. It put everything up and chased and harassed a good few gulls along the way.PC & GF

Two Glossy Ibis were still present at Portmarnock up until 9pm when they flew north up river to roost. Showing very well at times.PC

An Albino Swallow with normal Swallows at the Kennels, Broadmeadows this morning.  Also 4 Golden Plover in Summer plumage (our first reported sighting for Autumn).BK

At Sandymount this evening there were 8025 Terns coming in to roost. A very fine sight! OM

At Swords Estuary this evening, 2 Common Gull, 3 Great Black-backed Gull, 10+ Lesser Black-backed Gull, 50+ Black-headed Gull, 40+ Redshank, 5 Common Sandpipers, 3 Lapwing amongst the usual Mute Swans.MK

A single Common Tern over the Liffey near the Four Courts this morning heading towards Heuston Station.MC

A great selection of species at Bull Island:  Dunlin 1000+; Black-tailed Godwit; Turnstone; Grey Plover; Redshank 600+; Greenshank; Lapwing; Shoveller; Teal;  and Widgeon.  Also 50+ Ringed Plover at foot of the Wooden Bridge, inc many juveniles.CM

Broadmeadows:  14 Grey Plovers in Summer plumage, 7 Ruff and 1 Common Sandpiper at the estuary.BK

Sparrowhawk seen in a front garden on St. Lawrence Road, Clontarf this evening.DG

Off Bremore Pt./Cardy Rocks, Balbriggan today:  Estimate of about 8 Balearic Shearwaters moving up and down the coast with large feeding groups of Manx, totaling about 2000 birds;  1 winter plumaged Black-throated Diver and 2 Red-throated Divers;  1 Juvenile Black Tern feeding for about 20 min. with other terns before drifting north.
At Gormanston, Meath:  3 Balearic Shearwaters offshore with Manx;  8 Mediterranean Gulls.
Between Gormanston and Balbriggan: Still about 100 Roseate Terns along the coast.AGK

News Update: A Little Egret seen on the Bull Island on 5/8/2010 had been ringed as a nestling on 7/6/2010 at Penrhyn, North Wales. Two other Egrets from the same nest have been sighted in Ayrshire.GF

At Swords: 6 Ruff, 2 Common Sandpipers, 3 Shoveler, 3 Buzzards soaring together north of the estuary.
Two Stock Doves came in to drink at the outflow on north side of Bull Island embankment.GF

One Balearic Shearwater with feeding raft of Manx Shearwater off the Cardy Rocks. 1 Arctic Skua, pale phase flying south. 1 Juvenile Mediterranean Gull.   Also 4 Mediterranean Gulls at Gormanston ( two adult and two 1st Summer).AGK

Off the Cardy Rocks,Balbriggan: 1 Arctic Skua, dark phase, flying south.AGK
At Clogherhead: 2 Razorbills, Arctic Terns, Common Tern and several Roseate Terns feeding at the Pier.  Although very calm weather there was a good number of Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars, Gannets and Terns passing offshore.
At Dunany Point: over 250 Common Scoters and a large group of 100 Red Breasted Mergansers.BS

12 August 2010
Kilcoole: Two Eclipse male Wigeon and 1 Eclipse Gadwall with the Mallards at Webb's field. Also 2 Grasshopper Warblers, 1 Sedge Warbler and a Juvenile Stonechat. Offshore were several groups of Manx Shearwaters and Gannets, 1 Great Skua mobbing a Herring Gull.  Meanwhile down towards the breaches several Black-tailed Godwits in breeding plumage and a Little Gull among the Black-headed Gulls.BS

Two Kingfishers, 3 Willow Warblers and a Chiffchaff on River Dodder between Ballsbridge and Lansdowne Road bridge this evening. Swifts appear to have left Dublin 6, last seen on 5 August (125 birds). MC

Today on the North Bull Island there were large numbers of Bar-tailed and Black-tailed Godwits with birds varying from full summer to full winter plumage and everything in between. Also about 50 Knot; 19 Little Egrets;  100 Dunlin; 20 Ringed Plover;  4 Grey Plover with one beautiful male in full breeding plumage; 12 Greenshank and about 20 Common Terns feeding.PC
Also over 600 Redshanks on either side of the Causeway.LB

Swords: 1 second summer Mediterranean Gull  
Rogerstown: 1 adult Yellow-legged Gull; 2 Whimbrel; and c60 Knot - some in summer plumage.DO'M

Slieve Blooms:  1 Kestrel; 2 Ravens; 4/5 Bullfinches; and a family of 4 Whitethroat in the Blooms this morning.              
Pollardstown Fen: good numbers of Sedge Warblers; 1 male Bullfinch; and a Water Rail heard.AR
