22 March 2014

Tolka Branch outing to Kilcoole:  22 birders and a dog defied the weather forecast for inclement weather and were rewarded with sunshine in Kilcoole this morning.   We were treated to sights of a typical flighty and fidgety Chiffchaff and a male Bullfinch and a Goldcrest at in the Alder Trees to the right of the car park.   Also in that area were: Blue Tits, Blackbirds, Goldfinch, Robin, and a Water Rail and Wren were heard but not seen.   As we made our way along the sea front looking across the railway tracks we spotted 4 Tree Sparrows sunning themselves at the top of the gorse hedges.  In the smaller ponds were a few Teal and 2 Mute Swans and a Little Grebe.  Further along in the larger ponds were 17 Whooper Swan, lots more Teal, a Little Egret, 80 Greylag Geese, 200 Brent Geese.  We got good views of a male Stonechat and 2 Reed Bunting, while behind us a Red-throated Diver flew by, keeping low to the sea.   There were the odd few Lapwing making great displays of courtship, while a flock of Golden Plover kept to the business of feeding and ignoring the solitary Grey Plover in their midst. Several Shelduck and Widgeon and a couple of Little Grebe occupied the left edge of the large pond.  Nearer to the bridge in the mudflats was a hive of activity with 4 Black-tailed Godwit, Turnstone, Redshank, Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher drilling away at the mud. Beyond the railway bridge a perched-upon-a-fence-post Cormorant kept the group puzzled for a while.  The Cormorant had an unually large expanse of white plumage on its head, which is indicates it was an adult male Cormorant in breeding plumage. Sea-ward were a couple of Gannet in the far distance, and the Red-throated Diver right in at the shore line.  Across the fields were 4 Pheasants and one could be heard calling nearby on our return to the car park. Back to the cars for tea just in time before the hail shower.RD
