18 September 2010 - Tolka Branch Trip Report

Swords Estuary:  At the south side of Swords Estuary we saw lots of Redshank, Greenshank, Lapwing and large numbers of Dunlin, Knot and Black-tailed Godwit.  Eight Grey Heron and a couple of juvenile Cormorant remained motionless on the grassy bank.  Later on in the morning we had 4 Snipe showing well on a central sandbar. We had several Golden Plovers with the Redshanks.  Also saw lots of Black-headed Gulls with a few Common Gulls.  A Kestrel was seen off the premises by a mob of very determined Swallows, which must have relieved the small flocks of Linnet and Goldfinch.
Moving over to the north side of the Estuary 5 Swifts wheeled closely above our heads.  While the resident Bar-headed Goose and Mute Swans competed for our attention, another Snipe and a Greenshank presented good views.
Knock Lake: With the rain getting heavier and colder we went to Knock Lake which was very quiet with Little Grebe, Coot, Moorhen and Mallard on the lake.
At Skerries: a summer plumaged Red-throated Diver, Guillemot, Razorbill and 2 Mediterranean Gulls and Curlew showed well.
Red Island car park:  a few Purple Sandpiper and Turnstone were a treat to see.
We called it a day there as the weather was awful and headed home.
