22 September 2012 - Tolka Trip Report
We couldn't have asked for a better day to start off the new
birding year than today; a blue-skied mild day to wean us back and
an encouraging start for the new and not so new faces that made up
the group of 22 that traipsed about north County Dublin in search
of ornithological delights. Our first port of call was...
Swords Estuary: from the south side of the estuary we viewed 3 Common
Snipe (2 sleeping and 1 busily foraging) at the edge of the
central sandbar. In the waters in front of them were plenty
of Black-headed Gulls, Lapwing, Redshank and Black-tailed
Godwit (still in various degrees of breeding plumage).
Also spotted were 2 Greenshank, Dunlin, several
motionless Grey Heron and a couple of juvenile Cormorants.
Approximately 20 Brent Geese were feeding vigorously, all
adult birds.
Moving over to the north side of the Estuary the Mute Swans
dominated the view. A Moorhen with 2 juvenile chicks
and several pairs of Mallard were the only addition to our
list. So we decided to move further north and head to...
Gormanstown: 3 Red-throated Diver, rafts of Great-crested
Grebe and Common Scoter kept us looking at the horizon.
Meanwhile, right under our scopes were numerous Ringed Plovers,
Dunlin (some still showing breeding plumage). Plenty
more Black-tailed Godwits and Black-headed Gulls, a
few Lesser Black-backed Gulls paddled at the shore's
edge. One Mediterranean Gull was amidst them. A
lone Sandwich Tern weaved its way amongst them all,
turning over stones, unusual behaviour for a Tern, but he was just
copying the several Turnstones present. Also
present, were a few Kittiwake and Common Gulls on
the beach. Swallows were flying about over head and there
was a singing Robin in the bushes behind. To the right
of the river in the trees 1 Buzzard sat watching the scene
below. Not wanting the day to end we decided to move
homeward stopping off at...
Rogerstown: on our trek to the south hide we
espied a few flocks of Goldfinch and a couple of Stock
Doves. In the middle pond there were 7 Little Grebe
and 1 Coot. At hide we had good views of a Buzzard
harassing crows across over the old dump and on the mudflats
plenty Godwits, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Curlew,
and several Teal and a few Widgeon were
seen. As we made our way back a Buzzard flew
right over our heads and gave us a cry of 'peeee-uu',
which we took as our cue to go home.
Many
thanks to all who turned out on the day. Kieran O' Byrne (the
New Chairman of BirdWatch Ireland) joined us on the outing and we,
as a branch, were delighted to meet him. If I have omitted
any sighting for the trip, please email me at dublinbirding@gmail.com
