12 September 2015 - Tolka Outing
Tolka's first outing of the season was to Broadmeadows
(Swords estuary) and then on to Rogerstown. The morning was
bright with a cool breeze and a good number of people turned out
despite the forecast and the previous night's weather. At
Broadmeadows the group was added to by a fair few birders coming
and going, all hoping to catch a glimpse of a young Osprey
that's been hanging around for the past week or so. The water
was quite high so not much mud exposed and, therefore, not many
waders to look at. Nonetheless we still managed to see a
good few Black-tailed Godwits (some still in summer
plumage), 1 or 2 Ruff, Snipe, Greenshank, Redshank,
Curlew and Lapwing. Just as we were scanning
through all the waders for more species, they all took off.
Everyone looked to see what had put them up and then the Osprey
was spotted, together with a Buzzard. The bird preformed
beautifully diving and shaking itself dry 3 or 4 times before
catching a small fish. It then flew quite high and headed in the
Rogerstown direction. A Kingfisher was seen on a few
occasions and then two together were seen perched up around the
motorway flyover. Other birds seen at Broadmeadows included
Little Egrets, Grey Herons, Cormorants, Mallard, Teal, Mute
Swan, B.H Gull, LBB Gull and GBB Gull. Swallows and Sandmartins
seemed to be constantly passing overhead in a southerly
direction. Later in Rogerstown, the walk up to and back
from the south hide was very quite, and again the water levels
left little mud exposed. We did manage to pick up a nice Green
Sandpiper in the pools of water in the field, just out the
west window of the hide. Apart from that there were big numbers
of Egrets and a few Buzzards. A good morning's birding was had
by all. Phil Clancy
